Day of rest? No chance!

The clocks went forward overnight so various timepieces around the house showed conflicting times depending on whether or not they’re connected to the internet. As a result, the day started with the usual confusion about what the time actually was. Normally there’s always one clock that gets missed, but I managed to update each and every one (including the heating timer and the car clock). That must be some kind of record!

In an uncharacteristic display of sibling love and cuteness, the children got in to bed together before we headed downstairs for breakfast. It was short-lived though as they quickly began poking and kicking each other, but it was very nice while it lasted. It also proved to us that a bunk bed is definitely not on the cards for the future!

Once we’d got downstairs, the kids were very excited as I’d promised a go on the Wii. As a family we’ve shied away from getting a modern console as, frankly, the kids are too young to warrant it and we have more than enough fun messing around with their toys. As such, playing with the Wii is a big treat!

Their favourite game is Swordplay in Wii Sports Resort, but they get far too excited beating up their opponents and I was looking for a bit of a calmer start to the day. In the end I opted for bowling – it’s a classic and they can both play at the same time. Once we’d got over the initial strops when they missed the pins and the inevitable moans of “I can’t do it”, they quickly got stuck in to the game. Genevieve did particularly well scoring an impressive 131 that was boosted by a cheeky double strike. James struggled with the strikes but showed a remarkable ability to mop up the remaining pins – he was the king of spares!

As it was early spring we were hoping for green shoots, bright sunshine and beautiful blossom. In reality we were treated to several heavy downpours of hail and a seemingly relentless blast of bitterly cold wind. Nonetheless the kids wanted to rampage in the garden as the hail hammered down. They also wanted to catch some hail on their tongues. I tried to explain that it wasn’t the same as catching a snowflake (as hail is much harder and heavier) but they were rather insistent. After a valiant effort and some success in catching hail, they both quickly decided that it wasn’t as much fun as they’d initially thought so we moved back in to the warm.

As well as the family fun it also turned in to a day for odd jobs. I finally got around to hanging a photo from our wedding along with a hand-painted portrait of Genevieve. We also hoovered everywhere, cleaned the kitchen and generally spruced up the house. It’s going to become more difficult to clean as we go, especially if we end up properly locked in the house, so little and often is probably the best approach.
