VE Day – very enthusiastic children day

Today James was up a little early and Stephen woke up before me, so that meant some Daddy/James quality time while Genevieve and I slept. At James’s own request, they did some maths work rather than play or watch the TV. It involved shapes and colour. And, more importantly, Stephen managed to get James to hold his arrow pencil even better than before by resting his wrist on the table. Hurrah! Slowly we are getting there with him and this is definitely an achievement going down on my isolation wins list! (Yes, I have one of those lists. I also have a isolation goals list, but lots of that hasn’t been as easy with a poorly Stephen).

Genevieve was very excited and happy when she came down to breakfast to the news she had been awarded an achievement certificate this week from her school teacher for good Maths work. We made one for James too as he has worked so hard on his pencil grip this week. Super proud of my little workers.

Genevieve and James are becoming firm friends throughout lockdown. It’s so lovely to be witnessing. Don’t get me wrong, they still fight, but when they are friends it’s real and they love each other. This morning, James wanted to give his sister a big hug and kiss. Beautiful.

After the kids had a calm and easy breakfast we started to watch Star Wars: Episode III (Revenge of the Sith). The kids love the lasers and fight scenes, but Stephen and I decided to skip over the bit with Anakin in the lava.

Unusually, at about 10am James said he was still hungry and Genevieve started to demand a green apple. She was very specific. I then learnt that the reason for this was that she wanted to bite into said apple and pull out her new wobbly tooth. It’s really very wobbly and rather gross if you ask me!

We then had a spot of iPad time while I showered and Stephen was still napping. All was going well until I came downstairs and started to try to get some jobs done, at which point James went into our bedroom and woke Stephen up. Well done James.

After lunch, I set both children off designing badges for various Beaver/Rainbow challenges. They really got stuck in and the designs were excellent.

With the badges completed, I popped over the road briefly to see our friend Gemma for some social distancing VE Day celebrations. I only stayed for a drink but it was nice to be out of the house. The sun was strong though (I wasn’t wearing sun cream – whoops!) and I knew Stephen would need another nap so didn’t linger.

While I was there, Stephen drove over to see Auntie Daisy and Uncle Ben to collect some beer from a keg that had come from the running club. The children had fun and enjoyed seeing their family. And Stephen enjoyed getting out of the house.

The afternoon was very chilled as the kids were pretty tired today, so we played a bit of catch in the garden and then watched some more TV.

Before we knew it, it was Grandma Lindsey chat time and dinner. Where had the day gone!

James came out with a total gem over dinner:

James: “Mum – does Darth Vader kill unicorns?”
Me: “No.”
James: “Oh. What does he kill?

I feel his Star Wars education must continue!

Before bed, there was just enough time to pop up to see what the friendly neighbourhood monkey up the road was doing today. He was in full VE Day celebration mode. We felt that joining him for a salute was definitely appropriate, and James insisted on saluting with both hands!
