Grandparent holidays are awesome

A second day co-written by Grandad Lawrie.

There is no need for an early morning wake-up call when the children are staying. 6.30am witnessed the first call of “Grandma Lindsey” from the spare bedroom; followed by an exodus by everyone except Grandad to the kitchen for breakfast. Grandad, instead, was brought tea in bed!

The children then enjoyed an extended period of playing in the bath followed by the dreaded home-schooling.

Genevieve was no more willing or persuadable than she had been the previous day, but produced the necessary written work a little grudgingly after a great deal of prodding by Grandma.

Meanwhile, James completed a number of mazes and spot-the-differences with Grandad with great ability and self-confidence; and then drew an amazing picture of his family, although he could not explain why he had depicted his dad as a mermaid!

The children were offered a variety of goodies for lunch, but opted for jam and salami sandwiches again!

iPad time after lunch was allowed, although regretted to some extent when both Genevieve and James refused to give them up after the agreed half an hour. Gentle persuasion won the day, with much of the remainder of the afternoon spend in glorious sunshine in the garden playing various games mainly organised again by Genevieve. However, James appeared not to understand fully the rules of petanque. He spent most of the game moving the winning bowls away from the jack and kicking his ones closer so that he could declare himself the winner. He did so with a cheeky smile on his face; knowing exactly what he was doing and the fun he was providing. He’ll do well in life!

Sadly, both Genevieve and James turned down Grandad’s offer of his extra special homemade meatballs in a tomato sauce for dinner in favour of dinosaur burgers and chips!

Stephen and I, left to our own devices, decided to have a “posh” child-free meal. We (Stephen) made beef wellington. It was so, so good. He tells me that the main ingredient is love, by which he means the time and attention paid to the food but I really know what he means.

I also managed to do the food shop and spend a considerable chunk of the day chilling whilst also getting a few jobs done. Hurrah!
