Nature walks with Grandad are the best, especially when there’s ice-cream afterwards

Today it was my turn for a lie in for which I was very grateful, especially after a 6am toilet wake up from James. Nothing like a high-pitched scream to get you out of bed in a hurry! And the irritating thing was the scream was actually because a toy had fallen out of bed, the toilet was a side issue.

Breakfast today was delicious. The lovely people at Waitrose had come up trumps in our collection order on Friday and I had an almond croissant to eat. Yeay! It’s the small things that make all the difference at the moment.

After breakfast Genevieve attacked her sticker books again whilst James played with a range of things, including: the Duplo; his Lego; all the activities and letters Grandma Lindsey and Grandad Lawrie have sent him; all of the felt-tip pens; and his teddies. He was a busy boy – the mess was impressive.

I sent Stephen for a rest for a few hours as he was flagging. The kids and I watched some TV whilst working through some sticker books, after which they took a keen interesting playing with and brushing my hair. Maybe we can train them up as in-house hairdressers?

James wanted to explore outside. He quickly found a creepy crawly friend – a little beetle. I eventually managed to convince him that we didn’t need to build it a house and that it was better off in the grass.

Once Stephen had re-emerged, I had a quick shower and then went for a walk to pick up some pirate books I had bought on FaceBook. James came with me so we stopped to see the friendly neighbourhood monkey. Stephen was gutted to discover that he’d missed out on a Beano themed tableau today.

We had just got to the other side of the green when Grandad Stephen phoned to ask if we were home. As it turned out, he had just dropped a bike at the local bike shop (just off the green) and was in view when we were on the phone. I told him what we were doing and invited him to join us. James ran with sheer delight and excitement the full length of the green shouting “Grandad Stephen!!” over and over again. So cute!

It was so nice to have a walk with Grandad. He joined in James’s game of “go and stop”, and entertained his (frankly awful) jokes. We then had an adventure walking home down a new alleyway and through the woods. I don’t think I anticipated how long it would take to get home, especially with James stopping every 10 seconds to look for fish in the river. But we actually saw some fish and he loved it! Then on the path of the home stretch we also found a green caterpillar. He was a very happy chap!

Once we were home it was long overdue lunch. And then… ice cream time for me and the kids. Yum!

After lunch, we had some more Lego fun and a little more TV. Stephen and I took this as an opportunity to just chill out for a bit. It sped by and it was soon time for Grandma Lindsey chat time. While Genevieve was talking, James started striking a pose in his hat and glasses. I’m not entirely sure why, but at least he’snot camera shy!

Dinner was by special request of James. This morning when he had been brushing my hair, he twisted the hair around the hairbrush exclaiming it was just like spaghetti. So, yep, you guessed it, he had asked for spaghetti for dinner. My “Waga-mummy’s” offering of breaded chicken, udon noodles and sweetcorn seemed to hit the mark!

Then it was time for bed so Stephen and I could curl up on the sofa and eat a well deserved curry followed by cherry bakewell pudding. A lovely end to the day.
