The day of the Mummy Dash

The morning started with a task that’s becoming more of a regular chore during lockdown – I had to go the bakery first thing in the morning to get bread as we had near enough run out again. I have no idea where Stephen and the children put the stuff – they get through so much!

But then my day took a more interesting turn…

Today I had my first ever proper running event, by which I mean that I was in a running team, we had a proper start time and it was a proper event. It was a nationwide scavenger hunt run where each team was given a list of 60 items to find and take a selfie with within a 90 minute time window. I did it with six of my running mum friends, and there were two teams between us. Of course, I ended up in the smaller team of three mums meaning we’d all have to run further and harder (or maybe just smarter) if we wanted to do well.

It was both hilarious, fun and I got to go for a run. Oh, and of the 30 or so teams that competed around the country, my team won. Hurrah! It’s especially impressive as we only had three in our team and others had up to five members.

After we had all finished we met up and enoyed a cup of tea followed by a glass of bubbles to celebrate! It was brilliant. Oh, and our prize for winning? Free entry to the next one. I’m totally in!

After the run and bubbles, I popped to the bakery to get some cakes for pudding for all of us – well earned if you ask me.

While I’d been out, Stephen had walked up to the local bike shop with the kids to get my bike serviced. I can’t remember the last time I took it out for a spin, but it was definitely before Genevieve arrived so it’s been a few years!

On the way they stopped to see the friendly neighbourhood monkey. It had been raining so the monkey had cleverly moved inside to complete today’s activity. He was doing something I’m a big fan of – writing his journal. Good work Mr Monkey!

They also larked about on the green, but not for too long as the rain suddenly got much heavier and the wind became significantly more ferocious. As a result, the kids were exceedingly keen to get back home ASAP. The opted for cuddles on the sofa with Daddy instead of venturing outside again.

Once I was home and had showered, Stephen needed to rest so I had a chill-out afternoon with the kids. We did some art and crafts, and watched Frozen II (yet again). It’ll be available on Disney+ next week so it’ll be on our TV a lot more frequently soon. Oh dear!

James managed to break his “cutie pie” toy given to him by Grandma Lindsey and Grandad Lawrie. And by break, I mean he ripped its head clean off! He said he just “pulled it” but I suspect it was a bit more forceful that that. I’ll do my best to fix it, but I fear this is beyond Mummy’s surgical sewing skills.

He doesn’t know his own strength

The kids had a bath before bed. As part of the drying routine, Stephen normally sings “This Little Piggy” to James, but this evening James insisted on making up new words:

This little piggy went to Keston Ponds,
This little piggy went to Uncle Ben’s workshop,
This little piggy sat on the sofa,
This little piggy watched a film and ate popcorn,
And this little piggy went “wee, wee, wee” all the way home.

It’s not going to become a classic, but it kept James amused for a while!

With the kids in bed, dinner for was a no brainer. I had totally earned both of us a takeaway so we ordered delicious Turkish food – basically chicken and salad with halloumi and hummus on the side (you can’t have a Turkish without both of these in my opinion). The only trouble was that we ordered far too much. It’s a mistake we make each and every time, and yet we never seem to learn! Regardless of the over-ordering, it remained so, so good (and we had leftovers for the day after).

What a brilliant day!
