Holiday clubs are the best

In a change to the normal daily blog, this entry covers the last four days. The kids have been at holiday camp so there’s been a lot less to report on – each day would mostly be a summary of breakfast, making lunches, dropping off the kids, collecting the kids, feeding the kids dinner and then putting kids to bed. If you feel like you’re missing out on a daily update then please just read this post four times.

The children started at Munchkin Sports holiday club on Monday. James was particularly excited as until recently we had been told he couldn’t go. The ever-changing COVID rules meant that the holiday club initially said they’d only take children already at school, but Megan cleverly rang to double check and they’d just reversed that decision. What a result!

James’s excitement grew when he discovered that he was going to be in the Cheeky Monkeys group, although he was a bit sad to not be with his sister. It all worked out for the best though as the alternative was holding Genevieve back in a younger group and she wouldn’t have had as much fun. James did struggle on his first day so Genevieve was called for a supportive hug (that was delivered with an astonishing level of sibling love), after which he was absolutely fine again. Phew!

In addition to their holiday club the kids found the time to mess about with Megan’s phone. This started with Google AR – they were particularly enamoured with the tigers (although I’m not sure it’s very hygienic having one on your table).

They also hijacked her phone and recorded a series of video selfies. We only discovered this when the videos synced to our online photo storage. The cheeky little imps! They were very cute though.

Megan was at work on Monday and Tuesday. Although it was the end of term she had a mountain of things to sort out before the summer break, and also had a huge list of issues to resolve over the upcoming weeks. Teachers really are incredible.

I went out for a BBQ with my chums Nick and Jon on Tuesday night. It was my first real social engagement for months. Although I wasn’t drinking, I arrived with a crate of Fosters and a large Smirnoff Ice for the host (I just couldn’t resist the retro charm of an alcopop when I saw it in the shop) that were well received. I took great amusement over Jon’s insistence that Nick should use a meat thermometer to check each and every item coming off the BBQ – surely half the fun is the risk of ingesting an dose or two of salmonella! We also ended up investigating which beers are vegan for reasons that now escape me (Corona, Heineken and Guinness all are, but Fosters and Kronenbourg aren’t – weird!). It was really good for me to get out to see people but it was clearly too much for me as I was broken on Wednesday (despite not drinking a solitary drop of alcohol).

Having finished work for the term, Megan went for a well-earned pamper session during which she had a matching manicure and pedicure. Pink glittery nails top and bottom – very swish!

Megan’s new Garmin sports watch arrived just in time for holiday. She was exceedingly excited about this as it’s a big step up (pun intended) from a FitBit, and it’s much needed as she’s really getting serious about her running.

On Thursday Megan and the kids met up with Annabelle and Matthew (and their mum Olivia) in Whitehall Rec. They had a lovely time chatting and rampaging around the park. It’s a park Megan and I both frequented when we were younger so it’s always great to see our kids playing there too.

Aside from the things mentioned above, the rest of the week was spent packing and planning for our upcoming holiday. Bring on the Isle of Wight!
